How to Replicate NYC’s Most Popular Chocolate Chip Cookies at Home

 If you’ve ever lived in New York, you must have had a thick, chewy cookie from Levain Bakery. Even those who have never tasted these iconic cookies, must have heard about them one way or the other, and there’s a reason why they’re so famous.

These massive balls of half-baked cookie dough are considered the most famous cookies in NYC, and people often queue up to get their hands on the freshest batch out of the oven.

For years, people have tried to replicate these world-famous cookies at home, and there are a ton of YouTube videos and blog posts dedicated to copycat recipes but how do you know which one is the real deal?

Recently, a recipe video on Tiktok claiming to be a replica of Levain cookies went viral so we decided to try it out and see if it was actually good.

The cookies from Levain get their signature appearance and taste from their thickness, which helps the inside stay gooey and undercooked while the exterior gets crisp and chewy in the hot oven.

Recreating these beauties at home seemed like a daunting task until a genius baker on TikTok shared some secrets tips and tricks to get that perfect height and gooey texture. Moreover, the recipe is so simple, there is little reason to not make them ASAP!

There are plenty of methods on the internet for replicating Levain’s perfect gooey, chewy texture, from leaving the dough to chill overnight to even freezing the dough balls and cooking them in a really hot oven to prevent the interior from getting overbooked. But this recipe isn’t overly complicated and required only one bowl!

INGREDIENTS

  • Cold butter (1 cup, salted)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups cake flour
  • 3/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cornstarch
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips

Start by setting your oven on 410 degrees Fahrenheit to preheat while you’re preparing the dough.

In a bowl, whip your cold butter and sugar together to form a creamy mixture.

Now add the eggs one by one, beating vigorously in between Sift in all your dry ingredients and mix to form a dough.

Now it’s time to fold in the chocolate chips and scoop out the dough onto the baking sheet and bake in the hot oven for 7-9 minutes or until the edges turn golden brown. The bigger your cookies, the longer they will take to finish cooking.
